Kristin Scott Thomas made a brief stop in Toronto for the "Sarah's Key" gala premiere Thursday.
Based on a novel by Tatiana de Rosnay, the Gilles Paquet-Brenner-directed film is the story of the Vel'd'Hiv Roundup in France in 1942. The French police were instructed by the Nazis to round up 22,000 Jews in Paris. The film follows Julia (played by Scott Thomas), an American journalist, who while researching an article, comes across the story of 10-year old Sarah and the trail of secrets that change Julia's world.
Scott Thomas read the book after she was given the script. It's a good adaptation she said. "Tatiana is very happy, it's filled her wildest dreams," informed the actress.
"The film is about consequences, of people who are victims and who are tormentors and people who are neither," said the actress. "But what do you do as a bystander?" The multi-layered film brings up all these questions.
"It was a terrible roundup, 8,000 Jews were taken to Vel'd'Hiv," said Scott Thomas, adding that the site in the Marais district, is now home to Ministry of L'Interior and blocks of flats. The French only accepted it recently, noted the actress, when in the late 1990's Jacques Chirac publicly acknowledged the horrific tragedy.
It was an emotionally challenging character for Scott Thomas. "The roundup of Jews has been part of my ex-husband's family, so I've always been sensitive to that." She's glad to be a part of the film that has addressed this subject, she added.
Scott Thomas was in town briefly and donned Emanuel Ungaro on the red carpet. (The fashion house has a new designer Giles Deacon and this is his maiden voyage, informed Scott Thomas.)
"I'm always on my way to go somewhere when I come to Toronto." She arrived from London where she's filming "Salmon Fishing in Yemen." The comedy, she said is actually being shot in Scotland and Morocco. "We were shooting in the west part of Scotland, and it's beautiful." She's on her way to New York tomorrow to start promoting two films: the French film, "Leaving" and "Nowhere Boy."
So where does she reside? England or France? In France, she said. "I have no personal effects in the U.K., I'm so lucky to be in Paris," said the chic Parisian dressed in black pants and jacket.
