"Machete" filmmaker Robert Rodriguez will be handed the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award at the 2010 Austin Film Festival.
What took so long?
As one of Austin's most distinguished homegrown talents, Rodriguez also generates jobs and money for the local economy through his Troublemaker Studios ("Predators," "Planet Terror"). Rodriguez will accept the award at the fest?s annual award luncheon Oct. 23 at the Austin Club, along with "The Wire" creator David Simon, who is set to receive the Outstanding Television Writer Award, and "Unforgiven" screenwriter David Peoples, who will receive the Distinguished Screenwriter Award.
Rodriguez joins Ron Howard, Oliver Stone, Danny Boyle and Sydney Pollack as past honorees.
Rodriguez, who is pulling together the fourth "Spy Kids" movie, will also participate in the screenwriting conference that runs in parallel to the festival. He, Peoples and Simon will headline an "Art of Storytelling" panel on Sunday.
AFF runs Oct. 21 to 28.
